According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, at present, the world’s demand for macadamia is four times higher than the total output, so the room for exporting this product is still very large. In particular, potential markets such as Japan, Korea, China, the United States, the Netherlands, and Germany are very fond of this product.
In March 2022, the Prime Minister decided to approve the Project on Sustainable Development of Macadamia, in the period of 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050. The project aims to develop macadamia into an efficient and sustainable production industry, contributing to the implementation of the strategy for sustainable agricultural and rural development, period 2021-2030, vision to 2050.
The target is that the output of processed macadamia nuts will reach about 130 thousand tons of nuts by 2030 and 500,000 tons by 2050. Export value will reach 400 million USD by 2030 and 2.5 billion USD in 2050.
Regarding the size of the area, it is expected that by 2030 the whole country will reach from 130 to 150 thousand hectares and mainly concentrate in regions such as the Northwest and the Central Highlands. The Central Highlands alone is about 45,000 ha, mainly distributed in 3 provinces of Lam Dong, Dak Nong and Kon Tum.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, by May 2021, the whole country has about 28 provinces growing macadamia with a total area of over 18,000 hectares. The production of macadamia in the whole country is nearly 8.5 thousand tons.
Dak Nong is one of the localities that grow a lot of macadamia nuts. Currently, the province has nearly 2,800 hectares of macadamia, mainly in Tuy Duc, Dak Song and Dak Glong districts. The area is mainly intercropped, with only over 500 hectares of net cultivation. Most of the area has just entered the harvest period, or the main harvest has started, the yield is quite good, about 1 dry ton/ha.
Over the past time, many businesses and cooperatives have cooperated in purchasing and processing products. Establishments promote products to offer and promote at conferences, fairs, exhibitions, and consumption hubs inside and outside the province. Dak Nong’s macadamia products are increasingly improved in quality, packaging design, brand, and traceability, so many people know about them.
