On July 9, 2022, according to Mr. Akaida, a JICA expert from Japan “cashew nuts from Binh Phuoc Province are famous around the world because they are delicious,” he said. This is not a new message, but once again it affirms that the Japanese maintain their faith and love for the inherent characteristics of cashew kernels grown and processed in Binh Phuoc Province. Maintaining the inherent characteristics that are contributed by the land of Binh Phuoc in each local branded cashew product will make the cashew industry great again, adding to the trust of other countries. Currently, the nutritional role of cashew nuts has not changed, but domestic and foreign consumption trends as well as many import countries’ cashew import standards have changed, even often changing in the direction of tightening. Such a change indirectly requires the centralized processing zones of the cashew industry in Binh Phuoc in order to satisfy the international requirements of cashew nut import in the current new situation.
Cashew processing activities in the province started in the 90s, up to now, the processing activities themselves have been moved through many periods of time and development levels. From small and scattered processing facilities in rural areas of the province, to medium-sized and labor-intensive processing plants in rural centers, to large processing plants with laborless-intensive in urban areas, to modern factories concentrated in industrial zones in the province, to the stage of relocating the deep processing for export out of the province as the planned industrial zones for processing export agricultural products in Binh Duong, Long An, Ho Chi Minh City, etc. At this time, there is a need for spcialized industrial zones or clusters to exclusively serve the province’s cashew nut processing industry. The province is urgent to attract domestic and foreign investment back to Binh Phuoc, forming a regional Logistics center for deep processing of cashew products.
At the starting point, the products of the cashew industry in the whole country were only cashew kernels. Until the addition of by-products including cashew silk, oil from cashew nut shell, roasted cashew kernels, the face of the cashew industry changed. The market has now exploited to hi-tech nutritional products from cashew nuts, refined oil from silk and hard shells of cashew nuts, wood pellets from cashew tree trunks and extracted residues, other new products from cashew nuts, etc.
The retail market becomes more powerful when the multinational retail chains were merged, putting downward pressure on selling prices from providing sources such as Binh Phuoc, requiring electronic traceability to village levels, raw cashew nuts are harvested with very high requirements on food safety and hygiene, controlling the levels of pesticide residues up to the lowest levels, eliminating or deeply reducing many harmful ingredients in finished cashew products such as sugar, salt, etc., to certify that establishments meet international conditions for participating in the chain of production and processing of cashew trees-based products, each establishment must prove that its emission to the environment and its impact on the environment are the lowest, the highest social welfare,…
All of the above changing requirements from the market do not mention that the establishments involved in cashew nut processing activities must be located in a separate industry zone or cluster, but to ensure the above requirements, only such industrial zones and clusters can loose difficulties for farmers, cooperatives, and export – import enterprises in terms of economic efficiency and international competitiveness in the current new situation.
While more and more domestic and foreign investors are coming to the province to explore the possibility of investing in deep processing of cashew products at higher degrees and in a international modes of operation, it means the Binh Phuoc cashew industry continues to develop in depth. Binh Phuoc Department of Industry and Trade will continuously update on issues surrounding the formation of an industrial cluster specifically serving the cashew nut processing industry in the province, opportunities to cooperate with foreign partners to develop deep-processed cashew products for export such as milk, drink and nutritional powder from cashew kernels; hi-tech refined cashew nut shell oil; and wood pellets
