Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh has just signed Decision No. 344/QD-TTg dated March 15, 2022 approving the Project on sustainable development of Macadamia in the period of 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Macadamia export value will reach about $2.5 billion by 2050
The objective is to develop Macadamia into an effective and sustainable production industry, contributing to the implementation of the Strategy for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in the 2021 – 2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
The project strives for the output of processed macadamia nuts to reach about 130,000 tons of nuts by 2030, about 500,000 tons of nuts by 2050.
The export value of macadamia products will reach about 400 million USD in 2030, about 2.5 billion USD in 2050, of which the proportion of whole macadamia products does not exceed 40%.
According to the orientation, the size of the growing area is to strive for the total area of macadamia nuts in the whole country to reach 130,000 – 150,000 ha by 2030, concentrated in the Northwest provinces (about 75,000 – 95,000 ha, mainly in the following provinces: Dien Bien, Lai Chau), the Central Highlands (about 45,000 ha, mainly in the provinces: Lam Dong, Dak Nong, Kon Tum) and some localities with climate and soil conditions suitable to the ecological requirements of the country. Macadamia tree (about 10,000 ha), determined by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and localities on the specific scale and location on the basis of a thorough assessment of investment potential, capacity, land fund, efficiency economic, social, environmental and market needs.
On the basis of summarizing and evaluating the effectiveness of macadamia development in the 2021-2030 period, specific orientations will be given to the size and area of macadamia plantations by 2050, striving to reach about 250,000 ha.
Regarding processing facilities, by 2030 all economic sectors are encouraged to invest in the construction of macadamia preliminaries and processing facilities associated with material growing areas in the Northwest and Central Highlands; upgrade 65 existing pre-processing and processing facilities, build about 300-400 new pre-processing and processing establishments, each with a capacity of 100-200 tons of nuts/year; creating conditions for enterprises to invest in building about 8 factories for deep processing of high-value macadamia products, each with a capacity of 10,000 – 15,000 tons of fresh nuts/year in favorable conditions. .
Build concentrated macadamia plantations
The State encourages enterprises to link with farmers producing macadamia nut through connecting cooperatives and cooperative groups to build concentrated macadamia nut-growing areas, forming a chain of macadamia products from planting to processing, to consumption. product consumption.
Scientists support localities to research the appropriate macadamia growing area for each strain/variety; transferring science and technology from planting, tending, harvesting, preliminary processing and product processing to households and businesses.
Branding Macadamia products
In order to develop the consumption market, the solution proposed for the domestic market, the localities need to support in building the Macadamia product brand, associated with the geographical indication; carry out trade promotion, propaganda and introduction activities so that domestic consumers have enough information about Macadamia products.
For the export market, localities continue to closely coordinate with ministries, the Vietnam Macadamia Association and enterprises to take measures to expand export markets and remove trade barriers; focus on implementing measures to promote the official export of whole macadamia nuts and kernels, and deep-processed macadamia products into the markets of other countries…
